I like many Carlton residents during the past eight years have watched the Kyngs Golf Club gradually take shape. Walking my dog over the huge mounds of imported soil and thinking to myself ‘this will never be a golf club in my lifetime’. Then out of curiosity in early May I decided to drive in through the front entrance and see if it really was open for play as the roadside signs have been proclaiming for some time.
To my surprise I discovered a very good 9 hole par 3 course where beginners can learn to play golf and experienced golfers can work on improving their short game.
If I was surprised by the short course I was really surprised by the 18 hole course> It is extremely well designed and once it has had time to mature it will be an excellent and challenging golf course. Of course it is early yet and it will take several years for the trees to grow and the greens to reach their mature state, and the Spring since records began hasn’t helped, but despite that Market Bosworth and Carlton now have the makings of an excellent golf course which with time is going to get even better.

For the last seven years we have watched whilst acres of poorly drained farmland have been transformed into a golf course. We have complained about traffic through the town and mud on the roads and speculated whether the course would eventually be finished. Now, at last the course is close to completion and it is time to take a fresh look and perhaps a fresh attitude to the latest addition to the community of Market Bosworth.
The designer, developer and mentor of the whole project is ex PGA professional Nick Leatherland. He has used his vast experience and knowledge of the golf industry and modern techniques of golf course development to complete a top quality par 70, 6730 yard, 18 hole golf course, one full length practice hole and a 9 hole par 3 course, all designed around a purpose built landscape with many natural features including streams, ponds and plantations.
The landscape theme of the course has been designed to maximise seclusions between playing areas, especially between tees and greens and the contoured landscaping between holes offers great seclusions from other players.
The whole site offers a tranquil retreat from the noise and rigours of everyday life with just the occasional hoot of the steam train on the Battlefield Line. As well as numerous ponds and lakes planted at the margins with indigenous plants, areas have been set aside to encourage wild flowers, insects and butterflies. Mature trees have been maintained and many new trees have been planted. The footpath running through the course has become a gateway to an attractive picturesque landscape.
In November 2010 the golf course was visited by representatives of the English Golf Union including the President and the Secretary of the Leicestershire and Rutland E.G.U who considered that once the full potential of the course was realised, Market Bosworth would benefit from a new development to be proud of.
Local students are already participating in group golf tuition with their respective schools and a full programme is planned for them in 2011.
The development is planned to be fully open in spring 2011 and a formal opening in the Summer is being planned with a Festival of Golf week including various hospitality events concluding with a Grand Finale Open Air Concert and firework display.
Whether you are a golfer, a natural history enthusiast or just an interested resident of Market Bosworth, get down to the golf course and have a look for yourself. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by what you see.
